Salt Lake City, UT, August 29, 2023WCF Insurance was proud to honor 28 scholarship recipients at the 33rd annual Legacy of Learning Luncheon and support their academic goals. The scholarship program offers educational assistance to spouses and children of workers who lost their lives in work-related accidents and helps these students realize their educational goals through trying times.

During the ceremony, Utah Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson addressed the audience of attendees as the keynote speaker. She shared her own story of grief over the loss of a family member, her story resonating the themes of persevering and overcoming tragedy that connected to both the audience and scholarship recipients.

Two scholarship recipients gave inspiring speeches about their experiences. One shared how he struggled in school. Admittedly, education was never his strong suit, feeling rudderless after the loss of his father. When he reached college, he changed majors five times over six years. Through that time, WCF supported him as he found direction, and he plans to become a college counselor in the hopes of helping others find their way.

Another recipient shared how after the loss of her mother, she fell into a cycle of depression and drug-use. The harrowing experience lasted eleven years, and year after year, WCF sent her applications to apply to the scholarship program. In moving through recovery, she discovered a passion for helping others and has dedicated her studies towards a PHD with aspirations to becoming a substance abuse counselor.

“This event is a way for us to express our gratitude and support for these families, who have shown remarkable resilience and courage in the face of tragedy,” WCF Insurance CEO and President Matt Lyon explained. Lyon offered opening remarks and led the ceremony for the afternoon. “We hope that this scholarship will help them pursue their educational goals and dreams and honor the memory of their loved ones.”

To date, WCF Insurance has awarded over 1,300 scholarships benefiting bereaved families totaling more than $2.75 million. “At WCF Insurance, we believe that learning is a lifelong journey, and we are proud to be part of it,” Lyon concluded. The Legacy of Learning program is just one example of the company’s ongoing efforts to give back to the communities it serves. WCF strives to make a lasting impact by continuing to make investments in the state and protecting the communities within it.
