Workers’ compensation is an insurance system that provides benefits to employees who are injured on the job or who develop a work-related illness. Each state maintains its own laws that control the type and amounts of benefits an injured employee may receive if a claim is compensable under the state laws.   
Generally, workers’ compensation benefits pay for medical treatment that is related to the injury or illness and a portion of the income the injured employee lost due to being unable to work because of the injury or illness.  The injured employee may also receive a benefit to compensate for a permanent impairment or disability resulting from the injury or illness and assistance with returning to work.
